Paul Katch Obituary

KATCH, Paul (aka Kutch), 95, Windber passed away February 9, 2024. Born August 20, 1928 in Windber.  Son of John and Mary Tkach.  Preceded in death by parents; sisters Helen (Kutch) Robatin and Ann (Kutch) Miller; brothers, George and Andrew Kutch.  Survived by wife of 75 years, Mary (Hovanec); son, Paul A. and wife Virginia (Widomski), Timonium, MD; daughter Susan, Swissvale, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Paul was the last surviving member of his immediate family. U.S. Army veteran – Korean Era.  Retired steel worker, Bethlehem Steel.  A graduate of Windber High School Class of 1947, where Paul played football, and baseball.  Tribune Democrat first team honors when he led the district in scoring in 1946.  PA All-State Honors, 1946. Turned down numerous college scholarship offers to stay in Windber and marry the love of his life.  Played for Johnstown Kiwanis in the 2nd annual All American Amateur Baseball Association (AAABA) Tournament in 1946 - the year it was played in Washington DC before returning to Johnstown the following year. Played semi-pro football for the Johnstown Clippers.  Member of the Windber Hall of Fame. Paul was a loving husband and father who loved to work in his vegetable garden, go fly fishing, and attend high school sporting events with his “35” gang.  Always proud to be Rambler, he was a volunteer football coach at Windber High. He also coached the Windber American Legion baseball team. Member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1:00 PM February 13th at SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Windber with committal to follow at St. John Cantius Catholic Cemetery, Windber with Graveside Military Honors by the Windber VFW Ritual Team.  Prior to the Funeral mass, a private ceremony with family members will be held at the William Kisiel Funeral Home, Windber. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Windber Woods for Dementia Care in Paul‘s memory. Online condolences may be offered at (Kisielfh.com).
